Ophthalmology

About the department:

To have the knowledge and skills necessary to identify the ophthalmic problems of a patient and their management, including emergency situations, health promotion, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and follow up.

Objectives:

  • Show responsible behavior with the patient and their families considering the cultural, social and economic background, and in dealing with all levels of education.
  • Use the required communication skills for taking appropriate history and conducting ophthalmic examination.
  • Appreciate the role of perfect understanding of basic science and the underlying patho-physiological processes relevant to ophthalmological practice, and the management of ophthalmic problems in patient and community.
  • Be acquainted with the epidemiological profile of the population and society, their cultural, social, geographic, legislative and economic characteristics, and their relationship to ophthalmological practice.
  • Have the knowledge and skills necessary to identify the ophthalmic problems of a patient and their management, including emergency situations, health promotion, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and follow up.
  • A wise selection of the most appropriate and cost-effective management of the patient problems.
  • Interact effectively with the ophthalmological health team and other health teams services.
  • Continue independent learning in ophthalmic sciences and practice, and pursue postgraduate studies.
  • Collaboration with national and international medical societies for joint researches and exchange of expertise.

Capacity

The department delivering its theoretical part and clinical skills session inside the premises of the College of Medicine, and the clinical part and bed-side teaching usually takes place in Hospital in collaboration with ministry of health

Graduate:

Graduates will spend 16 months for internship period through which they will spend two months training on the basics of ophthalmology. During their residence, graduates will be handle cold cases and refer emergencies. They will be ready for further specialization in ophthalmology
